Relative to the rules of the lesson, restorative practices aim to empower students to learn from their unacceptable decisions, understand the impact of those actions, and from there, grow personally in their knowledge of how to make better decisions and solve problems. If you have implemented lesson rules or understandings yourself, you know that there can be pros and cons. Some teachers succeeded, others did not. Students must participate in all academic programs, extracurricular activities, school events, and other school-related programs. To establish rules that work for everyone, it is better to know what type of class it is and how strict they should be. Everyone adheres to different expectations, so don`t force yourself into a particular pattern. If you don`t want a rigid list of rules, that`s fine. You can still have a positive classroom culture by being flexible with guidelines and focusing more on student behavior than their actions. Your colleagues are one of your greatest assets when it comes to establishing clear rules. Students often have more than one teacher throughout the school day, and communicating a consistent set of lessons can help reinforce students` expectations. Working with other teachers is also a great way to make sure your rules align with the school`s culture. If the class doesn`t match what the rest of the school is doing, students can become confused and start behaving. Talk to a trusted supervisor or colleague if you have any questions and take their advice seriously.

Photocopiers have always been controversial, especially as schools try to save money. A principal requires teachers to prove that their papers are “academically useful.” Another allocates only $20 per teacher per year for copying costs. And then there`s this: “Our administration gave us a box of paper every semester, and when we went out, we had to buy ours. What usually happened was teachers going into other teachers` rooms and stealing tons of paper. I always kept my paper case in the trunk of my car, like many of my colleagues. If a student is too sick to stay in school, a parent or guardian is expected to pick them up. The student must be officially struck off at the main office. All school staff were trained to obtain strict proof of identity before the child was released. 2.2.1 Students must be at school by 7:30 a.m. All form teachers will then mark attendance. No vandalism.

Don`t write or sculpt on your desk or on your school grounds. Find time to decompress outside of school. Every teacher must have hobbies and interests that allow them to distance themselves from the stress of school. Teaching can take up a big part of your life, but it shouldn`t be all you do. Maintenance of learning materials 1) All textbooks must be labeled and properly maintained throughout the year. 2) Books must be brought according to the daily schedule. 3) Students are not allowed to put stickers on stickers and color pages of workbooks unless teachers are specifically asked to do so. Be in the classroom every day and sit at the bell. Those who do not sit in their place at the beginning of class time will be counted late. “I had a manager who was an extreme micromanager. She had these rules for data tables. They had to be specially color-coded. Anyway, good. I forgot to color code and got a nasty email about efficiency. Whatever! OK, I coded by color. I have it behind you and it`s done. Then another nasty email. I wasn`t using the right shade of blue, red or green and had to drop what I was doing and fix it as soon as possible. So I put it off. I received so many nasty emails that it bordered on harassment.

All because the shades I used weren`t the director`s favorite shades. I started my teaching career at Headstart. I`m so grateful to be gone. We were not allowed to bring our own lunch as we had to eat with the students. We had to eat what the children ate. Most of the time it was good because we had a good cook, but we had a few teachers with nutritional needs and couldn`t always eat what was served. Our “boss” told them that they had to pretend to eat what was served, and that they could then have lunch in the break room when the 15 minutes allotted to them came. We also had to pretend to eat the food if we didn`t like it.

Also, we weren`t allowed to season our food in front of the kids because they couldn`t have salt and pepper on their food, so we couldn`t either. We weren`t allowed to drink soda or coffee in front of the kids, because if they couldn`t have it, we couldn`t either. Again, I`m so glad I left. For many students (and teachers), the idea of class rules seems oppressive, suffocating, and sometimes just plain unfair. Remember to keep things in balance by not putting the rules too much at the center of your students` attention during school hours. It is equally important to give positive praise when they perform necessary actions or behave well. Your students will notice if you use the exact same rules with other classes or teachers, so it`s best to personally adapt them to your own teaching philosophy. You can always start with another teacher`s list of rules that you can use as a base, but make them your own by adding or removing some along the way. From simple things like “raise your hand before you speak” and “come to class prepared for class” to more complex concepts like teaching students how their brains work so they can better process information and achieve better results in school.
